First let me say that this is one of the classic books that I believe everyone should read. It is the root of countless modern day stories and movies. There are so many popular vampire series today that I just don’t think it is right not to read Dracula.
The story begins with Johnathan Harker going to the castle of Count Dracula, before it is known what Dracula is, to discuss he purchase of a new house near London. Johnathan soon learns of the Count’s ways and escapes. With the knowledge of Dr. Van Helsing; Jonathan, his wife Mina, and a group of newly formed friends vow to destroy Dracula. They chase him from London all the way back to his castle in Transylvania. Here they catch up with him in is coffin during the last minutes of daylight, and severe his head and pierce his heart.
The book is written as a collection of journal entries, letters, and memorandums from the handful of main characters. This put me off a little at first, but I soon realized that it was a great way to express the point of view of the different characters. It also kept track of the timeline quite well.
To me the book had a few slow parts, but was overall attention grabbing, suspenseful, and exciting to read. The language and dialect that was used will really take you back in time. It was interesting to read how the people would have talked and acted in the time period that the story was written.
You will get taken on an adventure, and I believe anyone will be glad that they read it.
